winter
by Hannah Woerner

Leaves freeze in the winter cold as hands freeze against a trembling arm
Shaking trees and hands when the dark sets in
Ice falling to the ground to cover a buried heart
Sealing away the warmth of pain and love
Masking every trace of the person that existed
Building snow people in the place where solid flesh once stood
Freezing over the past and concealing the kindness
Skating through concern and away from prying glances
A paradise of snow to hide what is better left unknown

when the late autumn leaves fade color.
Quietly waving a final goodbye
in the chill as morning mist hovers.

It’s something between a pure feeling of peace
and a loneliness down to the bone.
Perfect tranquility rests on the air,
but the sadness won’t leave you alone.
