Looking Back Toward Eden

PROLOGUE
They must have glanced back at Eden,
at least once or twice,
when Adam and Eve were cast out from that first Paradise.
It began with sibilated words from serpent subtle,
to which Eve, in weakness, made rather thin rebuttal.
In consequence of that serpent’s urging proposition,
the first woman committed the first God-rule violation.

and let us lie
still on this bed—
The sheets still wet
your heavy breath
your naked chest
your little death
my hand on yours
The room is dark

What is hope before oblivion?
With all that was given, and only one restriction,
What a poor decision to revoke the perfect image.
