child of the earth

your feet have always longed
to be naked and free

running through verdant grasses
and soaking your toes in the sea

you were a child of the earth
until they stole it away from you

what purpose for your birth
if you didn’t rebel when you grew

the earth belongs not only to all those who are here
but also, to all those who will come, are coming,
and of course, Shakespeare.
