On The Road That Leads To Tomorrow

I walked along with a child today
On the road that leads to tomorrow.
I wasn't sure of the path ahead
For, like the child, I never had tread
the unknown. Was there danger and sorrow? I walked along with a child today,
He in faith with his hand in mine.
I looked for milestones along the way,
For bridges strong that the wind could not sway,
For a route marked good for all time. Should I open the door of my wisdom now.
And bid him take for his own
All neatly labeled and centuries old,
All proven successful there fold upon fold
Lay wisdom that for years I had known. I walked awhile with a child today
On that road that leads to tomorrow.
He made a bow from a new shoe thong,
He fashioned from wood an arrow strong
Adding feathers that a bird let him borrow. I dreamed for awhile with a child today
As we traced the clouds in the sky.
We spoke of the heavens, of things we both know,
About men and things and how people grow.
We spoke gently of the How and the Why. I ate lunch with a child today
From a pack that we both had prepared.
He cleared a rock for the food I spread.
We ate our full of cheese and bread.
Simple fare with the birds we shared. I walked again with a child today
On the road that leads to tomorrow.
Much we learned as we smiled.
I, the teacher, he, the child
Down that road that leads to tomorrow.
