Sinking

There’s something I hate to admit to have noticed
During those times when you’re fighting sleep and the world disappears into darkness
And the only sounds are your own breathing getting louder and faster and lighter
and the words, the words echoing through your mind drawing you further away from the light
As warmth deserts you and frozen hands tear at your heart
During those times
Crying is drowning
But your tears won’t dry
You are dragged under by an unseen current
And every happiness you’ve known is left above the surface
You fight and kick and scream
But the waves defeat you
You’re drowning once again
