Mercy, Is the Cry of My Heart

I am evil.
I am evil.
And still, in my evil, don’t leave me, Lord.
If You walk away, I will fall.
My flesh will devour me.

I’ve tried to please You
with everything in me,
but I can’t.
I can’t.

My strength is not enough.
I need Yours.
I’ve fought sin until my knuckles bled,
but I keep losing.
I can’t save myself.

Son of David, have mercy on me.
Don’t abandon me in this pit.
Don’t walk away while I drown.

Give me the hunger
to know You deeper than anyone.
The fire
to worship You in spirit and truth.
Consume the lust in me
before it consumes me.

Preserve my soul
from the destruction I cause.

Forgive my mouth
for blaming the devil
when it was me who opened the door
and let him in.

God of my fathers,
have mercy.
God of David,
don’t go.
Please don’t go.

I swore by Your name
then defiled it.
I let my flesh ride my spirit
and I called it freedom.

I knew it was wrong,
but I sinned anyway.
And now,
I’m trapped in a jail
I built with my own hands,
wearing a crown I gave myself
when I was made to wear Yours.

I forgot.
My one purpose
is to live for You alone.

So I fall before You,
Jesus Christ,
my Redeemer.
Don’t turn Your eyes from me.
Restore me in Your mercy.
Keep my name in Your Book of Life.

Help me not to give in
to flesh,
to this world,
to fame,
to desire.

Let me be the sacrifice.
Let this body become Your temple.

I throw my fame at Your feet
because You gave it.
I lay my urges before You
because You made me,
and only You know how to tame me.

I bring You my mind,
twisted, tired, tormented.
I bow it down to You, Almighty.

You,
who fight for me
when I am too weak to lift my head.

Take my stone heart
and break it into flesh.
Let me look like You.
Let me be like You.
Let me walk in Your mercy
and never forget:

I was not worthy,
but You called me worthy.
I was not righteous,
but You clothed me in righteousness.
I was filthy,
but You made me clean.

So if I’m safe today,
it wasn’t me.
It was You.

All glory belongs to You,
forever.

The Lord God Almighty,
the One who was,
and is,
and is to come.

Amen
