Remember When

I wonder if you remember
The Rocking Horse Brigades
The banisters we slid down
The girls' hair up in braids.
The many picnics, fairs and things
The cotton candy, too
The many miles we had to walk
To a show, just me and you.
The cracker barrels in the store
Where the men would sit and tell
The many stories of their lives
These memories I know well.
We knew our neighbors far and wide
Their welfare, tears and care
And in response to anything
They knew that we'd be there.
Now we sit alone at night
The neighbors pass us by
Yes, I do remember a lot
But only God knows why.
