Ballroom Dancing

Bonnie and I enjoy ballroom dancing
But we are not ballroom dancers
There is a difference
One manifests enjoyment -
A joyful response to the urge
To get up and move with the music
as when a waltz or rhumba begins to play

When that happens, we must move
lowering and rising, 1-2-3
lowering on the 1 and rising on the 2
At our age
we probably look ridiculous
but it feels great taking large steps
and moving quickly about the room

After a few minutes of Fred Astaire fantasy
reality sets in and the dance floor fills with others
no doubt feeling the same way - but a little slower to take to the floor
But we got started first
made a few turns around the floor
and now, trying to avoid others in the jostling crowd,
settle to swaying in place or taking small steps
and lots of hesitation steps.

When a rhumba or cha-cha starts playing,
the floor never becomes too crowded
But it doesn't matter much because
these are "slot" dances, where the dancers
generally stay within the confines of a small area.

How satisfying!
