Life's Span

In the spring of life it started
Everything was like the oyster
Un explored, and no one knew about the pearl.
As the summers came and went
A bit of nectar from the flowers
Dared remain to lift the spirits of a girl.
But, too soon, it was forgotten
Like a life that fails to follow in
The footsteps set before . . . and many fall.
In the autumn of their years
When they count their joys and sorrows
No one stops to think that God might call.
Then suddenly, it's winter
Everything is white and still, even peaceful
If you're lucky in that day.
As the wheel of life turns slower
And the candle burns much lower
We'd give it all for spring . . . that ebbed away.
