Separate lives

Our lives are divided by a door we can't unlock.
It stands between us-silent,unmoving,
a barrier of breath, memory, and time.

This door rises like a sentinel,
tall as a guard
trained not to speak,
only to keep us apart.

No key fits.
No pleading hand can turn its handle.
We press our palms to opposite sides,
feeling only the faint warmth
of a presence we can't reach.

And yet-
in sleep,
the wood softens,
the lock loosens,
and the door
quietly opens.

Only in dreams
do we walk through,
gather the pieces of a shared world,
and forget,for a moment,
how separate
our waking lives must be.
