The Written Word

The Written Word by John Michaelson

The infinite and eternal power of the written word,
Penned naked and vulnerable on the page,
Lies only in the destiny of its earnest reader,
With its untapped potential trapped in its cage.

As its curves and its corners are flowing with ease,
Whether handwritten, typed or etched,
Its power to influence the reader it attracts,
Is born from the authors hands outstretched.

But until the words on the page acquaint your naked eye,
And pass from your retina through to your brain,
The writing has no meaning and the author no companion,
And so locked in the prose the power will remain.

The authors intent to connect with its reader,
And inspire deepest emotions to disrupt safe ground,
Can only be achieved if the words are perused,
Or they stay on the parchment, not making a sound.

So, you decide to open the first page of the book,
And begin your new journey into somewhere unknown,
Author and reader are now intimately connected,
As you draw your night curtains and switch off your phone.

Your eyes glide effortlessly along the characters,
Words bypass your brain and charge straight to your heart,
Your sensations inside are exhilarating and raw,
As the author awakens your soul through their art.

You hear the authors message ringing true in your ears,
You see the authors dreams in the vista of your sight,
You feel the authors frustrations and desires in your spirit,
As you hold the authorโ€™s heart to help ease your shared plight.

With each page you turn, you feel transformation inside,
As a new you emerges from what you once were,
The power of the words delve into your consciousness,
Until the you that you knew, is now just a blur.

As you finish the book and come up for air,
Invigorated by its power that you now hold inside,
A profound impact is felt in the fibre of your psyche,
The author has taken you on one hell of a ride.

You stare into space as you internalise and reflect,
And attempt to decipher the fiction from fact,
And then it hits you like a thunderbolt inside your chest,
The words mean nothing, unless they inspire you to act.
