Bird Drama

(blank verse)

While sitting in a waiting room one day
I watched a dramatic scene of nature
A drama of primal savagery.

A large crow, was perched atop a lamp post
fixed to the roof of a parking garage.

The bird's activity was not distinct
and I would not have thought a thing of it
but for the fact that it was constantly
attacked by a smaller bird, a sparrow.

The tiny bird swooped on the larger crow
again and again without consequence.
After three or four attacks it would fly away.
The large bird remained unperturbed.

Then the tiny bird suddenly returned
to renew its sequence of attacks against
the established larger bird.

This drama lasted for three or four scenes.
Then the little one flew out of sight again.
The large bird then leisurely fluttered off.

Suddenly, the smaller bird reappeared
To attack again the moving target.
I wondered as to what might have transpired.

Did the crow invade the smaller bird's nest
to devour its eggs or eat the helpless young?

For it was Spring, a time of renewal.
Or had the larger bird snatched a bird
out of another bird’s nest somewhere else
And was attacked while dispatching its prey.

I shall never comprehend the reason
And the birds have already forgotten.
