Goodbyes We Never Saw Coming

Seven weeks flew by too fast,
Though, I begged each moment to last.

They became much more than friends,
The kind of bond that never ends.
Trust that blossoms in this friendly space,
That even years of time can never truly erase.

Some faces I had barely known,
A simple smile, a quiet tone.
Still one last talk before goodbye,
Brought the sharpest stabbing pain to my eye.

Every handshake, every embrace,
Left one more crack I couldn't trace.
Each hug spoke words no lips could speak,
Each farewell made my courage extremely weak.

Last summer hurt. This summer too.
These endings never feel less new.

Though even if our paths divide,
I'll carry bits and pieces of them all, inside.
Our directions may drift apart,
But these seven weeks will never leave my heart.

The last day, the last hug, the last glance, the last smile,
The last little moment I thought would stay a while.
The last project, the last visit, each memory came undone,
And suddenly I felt every ending, every single one.

All of the memories, all of the fun,
Didn’t feel they were “lasts”, until they were done.
I wish I could rewind,
But the hardest goodbyes are the ones we never see in time.
