Who you could have been

You could have grown up to master the scalpel
You could have grown up to be adept at the blackboard
You could have grown up to be an educator of minds
You could have grown up to be a skilled financier

You could have grown up to be a talented technocrat
You could have grown up to be a nimble-fingered musician
You could have known love, affection, care
You could have grown up to be great

But you could not have held on
until the 3rd trimester and beyond,
To life itself
And this was not your fault
Nature will attest to this.

But in my mind and heart
You are all the above
As you will remain the person you could have been
In my thoughts, dreams, and imagination
And for this, I am thankful.
