Death is Optional

I saw a lone walker once
Left hanging like a high five
Bottom of some steps
Leading to a hospital

I joked with someone near
“Seen any flaming chariots swoop by?”
They didn’t get it
Or maybe they did

I bought life eternal
Glory yet to come
A reward for the faithful and
Tough fuckin luck for the rest

Until I witnessed real suffering
Wondered and swore aloud at the
Indignity, chance swinging a
Wild sword, excused by God’s will apologists

I riffed on rapture when
Jesus was my favorite proper noun
But I was always nervous for the
Goat in me

I believed what was broken would be
Wrought new
Sturdy and lambent, that
Light would lead

I watched my heart change,
Treasure descending
Moth-eaten and rusted
But I held it at last

I fooled freely from my
Weatherbeaten heart and
Expanded its walls to
Shelter the broken

I'm certain the owner of that walker
Met Enoch and Elijah
Because I’m still
Rubbing my eyes
