Pale stones catching low light
marked the place
where the thin path
followed the water’s edge,

cool water moving over stone
in its steady way.

I paused at the curve
where the bank dipped,
lifting a hand to shade my eyes
from the early brightness,

stepping carefully between stones
toward the narrow crossing ahead.

A clearing opened beyond the trees,
the air cooling as the stream widened,
and the sense of a threshold nearby
settled into the morning.
