You Say You Hate the River

You say you hate the river
That babbling little brook
It rushes and it rumbles
That sly and cruel crook.

You say you hate the dirty earth
with secrets buried deep
for when you dig you won’t find diamonds
just loss, death, and defeat.

You scorn the rays of sunshine
You scorn the summer breeze
You scorn the sunset marigolds
and soft song of the trees

Though you will return again
you’ll come without your flame
The butterfly that you once were
will never be the same

And when the day is over
and darkness is what remains
the world will lose its color
and you’ll start to miss the rain.
