Lamentation

What is wrong, my soul?
My being, why faintest?
I've succumbed to desire,
but now, you're trapped in fire.

Oh, my heart, why do you weep?
My bones, why do you break?
How long have I strived,
but no joy has ever arrived.

Why are you dying, my spirit?
My blood, why are you dried up?
So far have I gone,
I haven't sung praises in so long.

What has become of me?
My eyes, why can't you cry?
I have spent every tear,
oh -- how long must I bear?

I have ruined myself
and have chosen the wide run.
I have followed the wicked,
and, my own doings, I am sickened.

You have no reason to answer
and I have no right to speak,
but I am mourning and begging
for forgiveness on high.

How wonderful the light
that only Christ, my Savior,
can reach for me...
